Lake District walks - Grains Gill

The walk up Grains Gill (and also up to Styhead Tarn) starts at Stockley Bridge, which has this lovely pool just below it.

This is the beck just above Stockley Bridge, with the path just visible up on the right. Allen Crags ahead, with the big fells around the corner to the right.

Here is the huge buttress of Great End which appears as you climb out of Grains and Ruddy Gills. No, you don't have to go straight up...

Here is the view down from the top of Ruddy Gill, in mid-winter.

Nearly the same view, in summer. You can see Derwentwater, Skiddaw and Blencathra, so we can't be too far from home...

Great End doesn't look so formidable as you skirt round to the left...
