Lake District walks - Derwentwater

Looking north from Surprise View. The lake in the distance is Bassenthwaite. The 2004 pictures show the very low level of water in the lake: a little island has appeared where there was none before! And it was not yet mid-summer...

Looking north from Surprise View

Surprise View view

In January 2005 the Big Storm caused considerable damage to the woods around Derwentwater, as you can see from this picture of Surprise View. But the view remains, so that's the main thing!

Straight down below Surprise Point is the Mary Mount Hotel, and you can also see the Lodore jetty for the launch.

while round to the left is the Lodore Falls Hotel, with the Derwent winding its way into the lake. On the left you can see the footpath which takes you round the top of the lake.

Here you can see that  it is sometimes worth checking whether the path is under water or not.  This was after a distinctly rainy period!

So was this, a year later.

If you used that same path in this direction, from West to East, you could see climbers disporting themselves on the crags.
