Welcome to Highbridge Cottages in Braithwaite!

And to the English Lake District, one of the most beautiful places on this planet!

Braithwaite, the village where the two self-catering holiday cottages are located, is a walker's paradise in the northern Lake District. Nestling at the foot of the Whinlatter pass, it acts as a gateway to the whole of the north-western chain of hills - the favourite part of the Lakeland fells for Wainwright, the sage of all Lakeland walkers, and he knew what he was talking about! The village is also only two miles from Keswick, the capital of the northern Lakes in Cumbria, and ten miles from Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth. The northern Lake District offers plenty of attractions for those who just wish to relax or enjoy themselves in stimulating surroundings. For something almost unique in England, a pair of wild ospreys are nesting and rearing their chicks just round the corner from Braithwaite; you can during the summer watch them catch fish in Bassenthwaite Lake just a mile or so away.  If you are interested in flora and fauna, use this map to find the many relevant places and events close to the cottages.

The self-catering holiday cottage accommodation in Braithwaite form part of a short terrace raised up above Coledale Beck, which flows gently past the forecourt.

To the north and east of the village are dramatic views of Skiddaw and Blencathra....

while to the south and west are all the fells of the north-western range.

The north-western fells. Braithwaite is just right of dead centre.

You have two holiday cottages to choose from: they are next door to each other in the same building, and can be hired either separately or as one unit. High Bridge sleeps 6, Highbridge Cottage sleeps 4, or 5 with the collapsible bed. Both cottages offer self-catering holiday accommodation equipped to the same high level (VB 4 stars), and are non-smoking and dog-friendly.

Our Environmental Commitment

At Highbridge Cottages we do try to work and live in an environmentally sustainable way, and we positively encourage our guests to do the same.  We invite you to support us in this aim during your stay, by using energy carefully, recycling your rubbish, shopping wisely, and supporting Nurture Lakeland with a small donation.   We also encourage you to avoid using your car if possible - there is plenty to do in this area without the need to travel far!

If you would like to offset the carbon caused by your holiday travel, we have found a charity in southern India which, amongst other things, plants thousands of trees locally and which we would warmly recommend for support.  The cottages contain local bus and ferry timetables and bicycles can easily be hired from Keswick Mountain Bikes in Keswick.

By all ‘doing our bit’ we can really help conserve the landscape and environment of the Lake District - and beyond!

Thank you.

We also support Fairtrade, and offer you Fairtrade coffee, tea and sugar on your arrival.
